DIVE DEEP - HOW TO WARM UP YOUR VOICE

Build a warm-up that suits your singing voice.

Build a warm-up that suits your singing voice.

DIVE DEEP

A good vocal warm-up does not consist of a fixed set of exercises that is the same for every singer. What your voice needs depends on your body, your vocal condition, your repertoire, and the vocal performance ahead of you.

During this intensive and mainly physical workshop, Tiffany Veys teaches you how to build a vocal warm-up purposefully. No standard routine, but a warm-up that is tailored to your singing voice, body, goals and way of thinking and learning.

You discover how mindset, body, breathing and voice work together. You learn not only to perform different exercises, but especially to assess which exercises are functional for your voice at a given moment.

A vocal warm-up in the correct order

We build your vocal warm-up step by step, just like a personal trainer prepares a physical workout.

First, we place the body in a functional starting position. Then we activate the breathing and the necessary support. Next, we work on an efficient vocal fold closure and further develop the sound.

This order helps you to work specifically on throat tension, an unstable sound, insufficient support, a limited range or a voice that does not respond immediately as you wish.

You learn to ask the most important question each time: what does my singing voice need today? More freedom, more vocal fold closure, more support, less tension or perhaps more physical activation?

What will be covered?

  • A targeted vocal check-in
  • You learn to assess how your voice and body respond that day. Based on that, you determine which exercises you need.
  • Physical activation
  • You discover how your posture, core, glutes and other muscle chains can support your singing voice. You investigate why some exercises create more stability, while others can cause extra tension.
  • Vocal fold closure
  • You practice how to develop an efficient vocal fold closure without squeezing or pushing.
  • SOVT and vocal fry
  • You will learn how to purposefully use SOVT exercises and vocal fry during your daily vocal warm-up.
  • The SOVT Trainer and bubbling through a tube with water
  • You will discover the difference between exercises with the SOVT Trainer and bubbling through a tube in water. You will learn how both applications work, what effect you want to achieve with them, and when to use which technique.
  • From exercise to repertoire
  • You will learn how to make the transfer from preparatory exercises to vowels, pitches, registers, and ultimately your own repertoire. This way, the effect is not limited to the exercise, but you can also apply the right coordination while singing.

Misunderstandings about vocal warm-up

During the workshop, we will also examine common misunderstandings and incorrectly applied advice regarding vocal warm-up and voice care.

A well-known exercise or popular method is not automatically the right choice for every voice or situation. An exercise intended for relaxation has a different effect than an exercise aimed at activation, stability, or vocal fold closure.

Thus, bubbling through a tube in water and exercises with the SOVT Trainer are not simply interchangeable. Bubbling through a tube in water can be strongly focused on relaxation and reducing tension. When your voice actually needs more activation or vocal fold closure, frequent or unfocused use can result in a too airy or less stable vocal function for some singers.

Therefore, you will first learn to determine what your voice needs and then choose a technique that aligns with that goal.

After this workshop, you will have:

  •  a broad and well-founded understanding of vocal warm-up and voice maintenance;
  • a clearer distinction between relaxing, activating and stabilising exercises;
  • a method to determine what your singing voice needs at a given moment;
  • insight into the logical structure of a functional vocal warm-up;
  • concrete exercises with the SOVT-Trainer that you can perform correctly and independently;
  • insight into the difference between bubbling through a tube in water and exercises with the SOVT-Trainer;
  • insight into when to best use which technique;
  • an initial basic routine that takes into account your singing voice, body and vocal goals;
  • insight into how to adjust a warm-up for a practice day, intensive rehearsal or performance;
  • practical tools to make the transfer from exercises to registers and repertoire.

You do not leave with a random collection of exercises, but with a well-founded framework and an initial daily basic routine that you can work on independently.

A routine that evolves with your voice

A vocal routine is not a static programme. Just as a training schedule in sports is regularly adjusted to your condition and objectives, a vocal routine must also evolve with your voice, repertoire and development.

For specific vocal goals, individual follow-up is therefore necessary. During a private coaching your routine can be further evaluated, refined and tailored to the current needs of your voice.

For whom?

This DIVE DEEP is intended for singers who want to learn to warm up and maintain their voice more purposefully.

The workshop is suitable for you if you:

  • do not know which exercises your voice needs;
  • notice that your voice needs time to respond freely;
  • sometimes creates more tension during warming up;
  • want to prepare your range, vocal cord closure or support purposefully;
  • want to build a useful daily routine;
  • want to better understand why certain exercises work or do not work.
